Próximamente, Irlanda asumirá la Presidencia del Consejo de la Unión Europea en julio de 2026, una responsabilidad que desempeñaremos en estrecha colaboración con España y con nuestros socios de la UE. Asimismo, nos uniremos a España en la conmemoración del 40º aniversario de su adhesión a la Unión Europea, un hito histórico al que Irlanda concede la mayor importancia.

Brindar apoyo a la comunidad irlandesa en España, ya sean residentes o visitantes, sigue siendo una prioridad central para nuestra Embajada. En esta labor agradecemos la inestimable ayuda de nuestra red de Cónsules Honorarios y esperamos con ilusión la próxima apertura de un Consulado Oficial en Málaga.

El intercambio cultural continúa siendo asimismo una piedra angular de nuestra relación. Mostrar la creatividad irlandesa en España a través de la música, la literatura, el arte y las artes escénicas, a la vez que se forjan asociaciones más sólidas entre artistas irlandeses y españoles, seguirá siendo una prioridad en los próximos años. Valoramos igualmente nuestra cooperación con la red de Centros de Estudios Irlandeses en universidades españolas distribuidas por toda la península.

On behalf of the team at the Embassy of Ireland in Madrid, I am delighted to welcome you to our website.

It is a great honour to represent Ireland in Spain. Relations between our two countries are strong and flourishing, and I am committed to ensuring that they continue to deepen. Ireland greatly values its partnership with Spain, both bilaterally and as close partners within the European Union.

The bonds between our peoples have deep historical roots. From the earliest migrations from Spain’s northern coast to Ireland, to the arrival in Spain of Irish people during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, our shared history has created deep and lasting connections. Today, Ireland and Spain continue to be enriched by each other’s communities, with strong links in culture, education, business and tourism.

In September 2025, we marked the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Spain — an important occasion to celebrate the depth and vitality of our ties. Looking ahead, July 2026 will see Ireland assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a responsibility we will undertake in close partnership with Spain and our fellow EU partners. That same year, we will also join Spain in commemorating the 40th anniversary of its accession to the European Union — an historic milestone to which Ireland attaches the highest importance.

Supporting the Irish community in Spain, whether residents or visitors, remains a central priority for our Embassy. In this work we are grateful for the invaluable assistance of our network of Honorary Consuls, and look forward to opening an Official Consulate in Málaga in the near future.

Cultural exchange also continues to be a cornerstone of our relationship. Showcasing Irish creativity in Spain through music, literature, art and performance, while forging stronger partnerships between Irish and Spanish artists, will remain a focus for us in the years ahead. We also value our cooperation with the network of Centres for Irish Studies in Spanish universities spread across the entire peninsula.

Is mór an onóir dom bheith mar ionadaí do rialtas agus mhuintir na hÉireann sa Spáinn. Ambasadóir na hÉireann

Brian Glynn took up the position of Ambassador of Ireland to Spain on 1 September 2025. He returned to Madrid after previous postings as Third Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ireland in Madrid (1999-2001).

Brian served as Managing Director for the Americas in the European External Action Service from 16 November 2020 until August 2025.

Before this position, Brian had a four-year posting as Ambassador of Ireland to the Federative Republic of Brazil (2014-2018) and had served as Director for the US & Canada and Director for the Americas in the Department of Foreign Affairs. During the period 2018-2020, Brian also served as Special Envoy of the Government of Ireland for its successful campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. He was promoted to the rank of Assistant Secretary (Director General) in January 2021.

During his career, he was also posted to Ireland’s Permanent Representation to the EU, including a period working on EU-Latin America relations. Brian worked as Director of the Department’s Conflict Resolution Unit, sharing lessons from the Irish peace process, and as Director for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe during Ireland’s chairmanship of that body in 2013. He also served as Director for International Security Policy in 2013-2014.
