Ambassador of Ireland to Brazil

Martin Gallagher

Welcome message

A chairde, amigos and amigas, friends,

I am delighted to have been appointed as Ambassador of Ireland to Brazil at a time of increasing engagement and connection between our countries and citizens. 2025 marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Brazil. While our ties have always been strong, with the Irish diaspora playing a significant role in Brazil’s history, over the last half century our relationship has transformed as a result of increasing political, diplomatic, economic and cultural exchange.

With the Embassy Team, our Consulate General in São Paulo, and our partners in Ireland’s state agencies, I look forward to continuing our work to deepen people-to-people connections and to grow educational opportunities, two-way trade, and investment. Enhancing our cultural engagement will be another priority, and I know I will be joined in these efforts by the many fantastic organisations already skilfully working to promote Irish Studies, Irish music and Irish dance in Brazil. As Ambassador, I hope that I can help both Irish and Brazilians to tap the many opportunities to build and grow partnerships in all of these areas.

Brazil is home to a small but vibrant Irish community, which I look forward to meeting in the months ahead; supporting our citizens, particularly though the provision of consular services, is at the heart of our mission. Ireland is also home to a large, and growing, Brazilian community, which has fostered Brazilians’ already strong affinity with Ireland. I hope the Embassy can also support returning Irish-Brazilians to share their love of Ireland with their fellow Brazilians.

Ireland and Brazil are also countries deeply committed to shared values - from climate action to championing human rights to global food security. As Ambassador, I look forward to building on these shared values in the months and years ahead.

Le gach dea-ghuí,

Martin Gallagher
