Welcome to the website of Ireland in Germany.

It is an honour to be Ambassador of Ireland to Germany and to be the first woman to hold the job since official diplomatic relations between our two countries were established.

Our first priority in the Embassy is to support our citizens. This website provides a guide to our Embassy’s services. Please take a moment to read about what we do and how we can help when things go wrong.

Ireland’s relations with Germany are deep and strong. We go right back to the seventh century when St. Killian travelled from County Cavan to Würzburg in Bavaria. Since then, there has been an enduring bond between our cultures. German academics were at the forefront of the Celtic Revival in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, while Heinrich Böll’s ‘Irisches Tagebuch’ sparked a renewed interest in Ireland for a whole generation.

Today, Germany and Ireland are both proud and committed members of the European Union and strong partners in the United Nations, working closely together to promote shared values of equality, democracy and human rights. Germany is Ireland’s largest trading partner in the European Union and our third largest globally. In 2023, two-way trade between Ireland and Germany was worth over €60 billion.

Affection for Ireland remains strong today and German tourists are among the most frequent visitors welcomed to Ireland each year. Irish visitors too come annually in large numbers to explore German cities and scenery reflecting a deep interest in Germany. At least 20,000 Irish people call Germany home today, and 15,000 Germans live and work in Ireland. Over 600 Irish students and staff members from our higher education system come to Germany every year to experience German life and culture. This community, as well as our large affinity diaspora, is at the heart of the Irish-German relationship, and central to the work of the Embassy.

This is an exciting time for relations between Ireland and Germany.

In January 2024, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin launched Zeitgeist Irland 24, a year-long celebration of Irish arts and culture, bringing the very best of Irish creative talent to towns and cities around Germany. There was something to inspire everyone in the programme – explore the highlights from the landmark projecthere.

More broadly, the third iteration of the Joint Plan of Action for Enhanced Bilateral and EU Cooperation between Ireland and Germany was launched in June 2024. This provides a framework for close engagement across a number of priority areas including Foreign, EU and Security Policy, Climate and Energy Policy, EU issues of common interest and people-to-people, education and research links. And of course, together with our counterparts, friends and colleagues in the German Embassy in Ireland we work closely to ensure an ever more ambitious partnership between Ireland and Germany.

Team Ireland has a strong presence in Germany. Alongside the Embassy, we have Consulates General in Frankfurt and Munich. Our state agencies, Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and Tourism Ireland work hard every day to promote Irish food, enterprise, foreign direct investment and tourism. We are also fortunate to have outstanding Honorary Consuls General in Cologne and Stuttgart and an Honorary Consul in Hamburg.

Es ist mir eine Ehre, die Botschafterin von Irland in Deutschland zu sein und die erste Frau in diesem Amt zu sein, seit der Aufnahme der offiziellen diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen unseren beiden Ländern.

Irlands Beziehungen zu Deutschland sind tief und stark. Sie reichen bis ins siebte Jahrhundert zurück, als der heilige Killian von der irischen Grafschaft Cavan nach Würzburg in Bayern reiste. Seitdem gibt es eine dauerhafte Verbindung zwischen unseren Kulturen. Deutsche Akademiker:innen standen an der Spitze des Celtic Revival im 19. und frühen 20. Auch irische Besucher:innen kommen jedes Jahr in großer Zahl, um deutsche Städte und Landschaften zu erkunden, was ihr großes Interesse an Deutschland widerspiegelt. Mindestens 20.000 Iren nennen Deutschland heute ihr Zuhause, und 15.000 Deutsche leben und arbeiten in Irland. Über 600 irische Studierende und Mitarbeiter:innen unseres Hochschulsystems kommen jedes Jahr nach Deutschland, um das deutsche Leben und die deutsche Kultur kennenzulernen. Diese Gemeinschaft sowie unsere große Diaspora sind das Herzstück der irisch-deutschen Beziehungen und stehen im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit der Botschaft.

Dies ist eine spannende Zeit für die Beziehungen zwischen Irland und Deutschland.

Im Januar 2024 rief Tánaiste und Außenminister Micheál Martin Zeitgeist Irland 24 ins Leben, ein einjähriges Fest der irischen Kunst und Kultur, das die besten irischen Kreativtalente nach Deutschland bringt. Das Programm bat für jeden etwas, um ihn zu inspirieren - entdecken Sie hier die Höhepunkte der bahnbrechenden Initiative.

Darüber hinaus wurde im Juni 2024 die dritte Auflage des Gemeinsamen Aktionsplans für eine verstärkte bilaterale und EU-Zusammenarbeit zwischen Irland und Deutschland veröffentlicht. Er bietet einen Rahmen für ein enges Engagement in einer Reihe von Schwerpunktbereichen, darunter Außen-, EU- und Sicherheitspolitik, Klima- und Energiepolitik, EU-Themen von gemeinsamem Interesse sowie zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, Bildung und Forschung. Und natürlich arbeiten wir eng mit unseren Freunden in der Deutschen Botschaft in Irland zusammen, um eine immer ehrgeizigere Partnerschaft zwischen Irland und Deutschland zu gewährleisten.

Team Ireland hat eine starke Präsenz in Deutschland. Neben der Botschaft haben wir Generalkonsulate in Frankfurt und München. Unsere staatlichen Behörden, Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, die IDA und Tourism Ireland arbeiten jeden Tag hart daran, irische Lebensmittel, Unternehmen, ausländische Direktinvestitionen und den Tourismus zu fördern. Wir können uns auch glücklich schätzen, hervorragende Honorargeneralkonsuln*in in Köln und Stuttgart und einen Honorarkonsul in Hamburg zu haben.

Maeve Collins took up duty in Berlin as Ireland’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in August 2024. Before taking up this post, Ambassador Collins was Director General of the EU Division of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.

Prior to this, Ambassador Collins was Ireland’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels. She has also served as Ireland’s Ambassador to Finland and to Vietnam and was the Deputy Head of Delegation at the Delegation of the European Union to Japan.

A career diplomat, Ambassador Collins first joined Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs in 1990 and, along with her Ambassadorial postings, has also worked in Ireland’s Embassies in Berne and Ottawa in addition to being the Deputy Joint Secretary in the British-Irish Intergovernmental Secretariat in Belfast.

At Headquarters, she has served in a number of roles including Regional Director of Asia-Pacific Unit, Joint Director General of the International Fund for Ireland and spent two years in the Department of Finance.

Ambassador Collins is a graduate of University College Cork, the Honourable Society of King’s Inns, Dublin, the University of Ottawa and the Institute of Public Administration.

Maeve Collins hat im August 2024 ihr Amt als Botschafterin von Irland in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Berlin angetreten. Vor ihrem Amtsantritt war Botschafterin Collins Generaldirektorin der EU-Abteilung des Irischen Außenministeriums.

Davor war Botschafterin Collins Stellvertretende Leiterin der Ständigen Vertretung Irlands bei der Europäischen Union in Brüssel. Sie war auch als Botschafterin von Irland in Finnland und Vietnam tätig und war Stellvertretende Delegationsleiterin in der Delegation der Europäischen Union in Japan.

Als Berufsdiplomatin trat Botschafterin Collins 1990 in das Irische Außenministerium ein und arbeitete neben ihren Botschafterposten auch in den Botschaften von Irland in Bern und Ottawa sowie als Stellvertretende Gemeinsame Sekretärin im Britisch-Irischen Regierungssekretariat in Belfast.

In der Zentrale des Irischen Außenministeriums hatte sie eine Reihe von Funktionen inne, darunter die der Regionaldirektorin der Asien-Pazifik-Abteilung und der gemeinsamen Generaldirektorin des Internationalen Fonds für Irland. Sie war auch zwei Jahre lang im Finanzministerium tätig.

Botschafterin Collins ist Absolventin des University College Cork, der Honourable Society of King's Inns, Dublin, der University of Ottawa und des Institute of Public Administration.
