Ambassador Elizabeth McCullough presented her credentials as Ambassador of Ireland to Italy to President Sergio Mattarella on 20 November 2025. Ambassador McCullough will soon present credentials as Ambassador to San Marino, as well as to the UN Agencies in Rome.

I am delighted to have the privilege to represent Ireland in Italy, and to serve as Ambassador to this wonderful country. The many links between our two countries have deep historical roots. Our premises in Rome, the Villa Spada, played a seminal role in the tumultuous events leading to the unification of Italy when, in 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi’s forces fought to defend the revolutionary Roman Republic against French troops. Very close by, in the church of San Pietro in Montorio, two of Ireland’s most famous historical figures, the leaders of the 17th century Flight of the Earls, Hugh O'Neill and Rory O'Donnell, Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell, have their final resting place. Ireland’s and Italy’s histories are interwoven throughout this inspiring country and magnificent city.
Today, Ireland and Italy are close partners in the European Union. We share a commitment to building a strong future for Europe based on the fundamental values and principles that guide our approach to contemporary challenges. Together with my colleagues in the Embassy, my priority is to advance Ireland’s interests in Italy and to further strengthen the close relationship we have with this important EU member state.
The strong tourism traffic in both directions and the natural empathy between the Irish and Italian peoples provide a very positive context for our work in the Embassy. Many young Italians are also studying English in Ireland and others are gaining valuable work experience in our economy. We have a strong interest in each other’s cultures and a shared enthusiasm for sport. There has always between an affinity between our two peoples, and our longstanding friendship enhances every aspect of our work.
Trade and investment links between Ireland and Italy are already strong and are continuing to grow each year. The Embassy, in partnership with our Consulate General in Milan, works closely with our colleagues in Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia (the Irish Food Board) and Tourism Ireland based in Milan, as well as with the IDA, Ireland’s investment agency, in order to advance the economic relationship between our two countries.
Our consular work and our engagement with the Irish community in Italy is facilitated by the Embassy in Rome and our Consulate General in Milan. We look forward to deepening our footprint in Italy in 2026 with the opening of Honorary Consulates in Palermo and Venice. We also work closely with our colleagues in the Embassy of Ireland to the Holy See. In addition to my role as Ambassador to Italy, I look forward to presenting my credentials to the Captains Regent in San Marino.
I am also Permanent Representative Designate of Ireland to the UN Agencies in Rome. The Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agriculture Development are focused on agriculture, global food security, emergency food assistance and rural development – all priorities for Ireland. Here in Rome, we represent Irish positions on global food policies and develop important initiatives in partnership with the UN agencies and other Member States.

Elizabeth McCullough is the Ambassador of Ireland to Italy and San Marino, as well as Permanent Representative to the United Nations Agencies based in Rome.
From 2023 to 2025, she was Ambassador of Ireland to Denmark. She previously served at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin as UN Director from 2021 to 2023 and Consular Director from 2019 to 2021, and as EU Strategic Director in the Department of the Taoiseach from 2014 to 2019.
Ambassador McCullough’s other overseas assignments have included postings to the Embassy of Ireland to Great Britain, the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, the Embassy of Ireland to France, and the Delegation to the OSCE in Vienna.
Other assignments at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin have included EU, political, and trade divisions.
Born in Dublin, Ambassador McCullough earned her degrees in Trinity College Dublin and the University of Padua.

Sono lieta di avere il privilegio di rappresentare l'Irlanda in Italia e di ricoprire il ruolo di Ambasciatore in questo meraviglioso Paese. I numerosi legami tra i nostri due Paesi hanno profonde radici storiche. La nostra sede a Roma, Villa Spada, ha avuto un ruolo rilevante nei tumultuosi eventi che hanno portato all'Unità d'Italia, quando nel 1849 le forze guidate da Giuseppe Garibaldi lottarono per difendere la Repubblica Romana dalle truppe francesi. A pochi passi, nella chiesa di San Pietro in Montorio, riposano due delle più famose figure storiche irlandesi: i leader della Fuga dei Conti del XVII secolo, Hugh O'Neill e Rory O'Donnell, Conti di Tyrone e Tyrconnell. Le storie d'Irlanda e Italia si sono intrecciate più volte sul suolo di questo magnifico Paese e della sua capitale.
Oggi, Irlanda e Italia sono partner stretti all’interno dell’Unione Europea. Condividiamo l'impegno a costruire un futuro solido per l'Europa, basato sui valori fondamentali e i princìpi che guidano il nostro approccio alle sfide attuali. Insieme ai miei colleghi dell'Ambasciata, la mia priorità è quella di promuovere gli interessi dell'Irlanda in Italia e di rinforzare i già stretti legami che abbiamo con questo importante Paese membro dell’Unione Europea.
Il consistente flusso turistico in entrambe le direzioni e la naturale empatia tra il popolo irlandese e quello italiano contribuiscono a creare un contesto molto positivo per il nostro lavoro in Ambasciata. Molti giovani italiani studiano l'inglese in Irlanda o vivono una preziosa esperienza lavorativa nella nostra economia. Nutriamo un forte interesse reciproco per le nostre rispettive culture, e un entusiasmo comune per lo sport. È sempre esistita un'affinità tra i nostri popoli, e la nostra amicizia di lunga data favorisce ogni aspetto del nostro lavoro.
I legami commerciali e gli investimenti tra Irlanda e Italia sono anch’essi molto forti e continuano a crescere anno dopo anno. L’Ambasciata, assieme al Consolato Generale d’Irlanda a Milano, lavora a stretto contatto con i colleghi di Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia (l'Agenzia Irlandese del Cibo) e Tourism Ireland con sede a Milano, oltre che con l'IDA, l'agenzia irlandese per gli investimenti, al fine di rafforzare i legami economici tra i nostri due Paesi.
Il lavoro consolare e i rapporti con la comunità irlandese in Italia sono facilitati dall’Ambasciata a Roma e dal Consolato Generale a Milano. Intendiamo inoltre rafforzare la nostra presenza in Italia nel 2026 con l’apertura di Consolati Onorari a Palermo e Venezia. Naturalmente, lavoriamo anche a stretto contatto con i nostri colleghi dell'Ambasciata d'Irlanda presso la Santa Sede. Oltre a ricoprire il ruolo di Ambasciatore in Italia, avrò l’onore di presentare le mie credenziali anche ai Capitani Reggenti della Repubblica di San Marino.
Inoltre, svolgo il ruolo di Rappresentante Permanente Designato dell'Irlanda presso le Agenzie delle Nazioni Unite a Roma, ovvero l’Organizzazione per l’Alimentazione e l’Agricoltura (FAO), il Programma Alimentare Mondiale (WFP) e il Fondo Internazionale per lo Sviluppo Agricolo (IFAD), i quali si occupano di tematiche prioritarie per l’Irlanda quali l’agricoltura, la sicurezza alimentare globale, l’assistenza alimentare d'emergenza e lo sviluppo rurale. A Roma, rappresentiamo le posizioni irlandesi sulle politiche alimentari globali e sviluppiamo importanti iniziative in collaborazione con le agenzie ONU e gli altri Stati membri.

Elizabeth McCullough è Ambasciatore d'Irlanda in Italia e presso San Marino, nonché Rappresentante Permanente presso le Agenzie delle Nazioni Unite con sede a Roma.
Dal 2023 al 2025 ha ricoperto l’incarico di Ambasciatore d’Irlanda in Danimarca. Ha precedentemente rivestito le cariche di Direttore per le Nazioni Unite dal 2021 al 2023 e Direttore della Sezione Consolare dal 2019 al 2021 presso il Ministero degli Affari Esteri di Dublino, nonché Direttore Strategico per l’UE presso la Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri irlandese dal 2014 al 2019.
Tra gli incarichi ricoperti all’estero dall’Ambasciatore McCullough figurano quelli presso l'Ambasciata d'Irlanda in Gran Bretagna, la Rappresentanza Permanente presso le Nazioni Unite a New York, l'Ambasciata d'Irlanda in Francia e la Delegazione presso l'OSCE a Vienna.
Ulteriori ruoli presso il Ministero degli Affari Esteri a Dublino sono stati ricoperti nei dipartimenti afferenti agli affari europei, politici e commerciali.
Nata a Dublino, l’Ambasciatore McCullough ha conseguito i propri titoli di studio presso il Trinity College di Dublino e l'Università di Padova.
