TravelWise lesson resources for teachers
Notes for teachers
The main objective of TravelWise is to provide students with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions before going, and while, abroad. Unique in terms of its broad area of focus – travel abroad - it complements many of the SPHE materials already developed by other institutions and agencies, covering topics such as bereavement, substance abuse/consumption; relationships; gender based violence; mental health and wellbeing, and civic engagement.
Discussing travel opportunities can be exciting for many, but for others there will be sensitivities around the topic that will need to be recognised, acknowledged, and dealt with. Such sensitivities include those who many not have the opportunity to travel abroad because of financial or residency issues, for example. Sensitivities may also arise from those who have caring responsibilities or health reasons which prevent them from travelling.
Needless to say, some students may have already come into contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Consular Directorate or one of our Embassies and Consulates abroad, should they or a loved one have required consular assistance in the past. There will be particular sensitivities if it involved a traumatic incident such as hospitalisation or the death of a family member abroad, a local acquaintance, past pupil, or a classmate themselves.
What will the lesson entail?
This lesson is intended to run over the course of one one-hour long class, but can be extended beyond this time frame if desired. Each of the classroom activities will impart students with knowledge on how to prepare for travel abroad and, once abroad, what to do in situations inspired by real-life cases.
How does the lesson align with the new SPHE curriculum?
The TravelWise SPHE lesson is designed to support learning related to the senior cycle SPHE curriculum. Amongst the aims of senior cycle SPHE is to ‘prepare for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life now and beyond school.’
