The Consular Assistance Charter
Teacher instruction: Teachers may now use the information below to provide further background and answers to the questions put to students in the preceding exercise.
Consular assistance can be summed up as the system by which the state can help Irish people abroad if they get into difficulty, no matter the purpose of their travel be it holidays, visiting family and friends, a J1 season, work trips, sports competitions, college, and moving abroad.
The ways the Department can assist Irish citizens abroad is outlined in its Consular Assistance Charter.
The Charter also outlines things the Department cannot do, such as influence another country’s immigration laws.
