Statistics on consular assistance provided to Irish citizens abroad

The Department of Foreign Affairs provides a range of help and support to citizens in distress abroad – from arrests to imprisonment, missing persons, serious injury, mental health difficulty, and death. There is a consistently high level of demand for consular services.

Irish citizens travel more, and more widely, than ever before. This presents fresh challenges for the Department as we seek to continue improving the assistance we provide to Irish citizens, and to ensure that staff in our global network of Embassies and Consulates around the world provide a highly professional service.

The Department of Foreign Affairs provides consular assistance within the remit of our Consular Assistance Charter.

If something goes wrong when you’re travelling abroad and you need help, you can contact us at your local Irish Embassy or Consulate or call us at the Consular Assistance Unit on +353 1 408 2527.
