Man playing the fiddle

Connections through a tune: Meet Paddy Lawless

There are many similarities between Irish and Latvian customs and traditions. Both countries are home to creative and artistic peoples and music. While distinct, each share cultural connections through shared expressions of life, history, and community, with Latvia known for its rich dainas (folk songs) and Ireland in its vibrant session music and Celtic heritage.

This cultural link has fostered a mutual appreciation and inspired many to travel from both countries. One such person is Paddy Lawless. A fiddle-player from Dublin, Lawless just moved to Latvia in March 2025. As a traditional Irish musician, Lawless wanted to find a country with strong musical and folk traditions and to foster a wider audience of traditional music lovers and thus he ended up in Riga.

Why did you move from Ireland to Latvia?

I grew up in Dublin, spent many years after graduating school playing music and was very active in the traditional music scene in the city and also around the country. I moved to Sweden in 2002 and was also heavily involved in music there, helping to organise festivals like the Copenhagen Irish Music Festival and many St Patrick's day events.

I came to Latvia in March with my Latvian wife, eager to start a new chapter in this country.

What do Ireland and Latvia have in common?

Although Ireland and Latvia are very different in many ways, they share a troubled past and this in some ways makes it easier to understand and empathise with the Latvian mentality.

What do you miss about home?

I miss Ireland constantly and always get a great boost of energy when I am there. The people are Ireland's greatest resource and the place is full of life and a great sense of fun. Of course I miss the music also and am looking forward to getting some music going here in Latvia.

What ways do you stay connected to Ireland?

I have no problem keeping connected with my homeland, through music especially.

That connection is always strong and my love of Irish culture in general keeps me fully grounded there.

What are you enjoying about your new life in Latvia?

I enjoy the calmness of Latvia, the slower pace of life, especially in the countryside, and the quiet charm of the nature here.
