Ireland's Mission Strategy in Liberia
Ireland’s current engagement in Liberia is guided by the Government of Ireland's Mission Strategy: Global Island: Ireland in Liberia Embassy Strategy, 2024-2028.
This strategy sets out the ambition for Ireland’s engagement with Liberia over the five-year period, 2024-2028. It will deliver on the objectives set out in Ireland’s foreign and international development policies and will align with the Government of Liberia’s development priorities.
Building on long-standing engagement, Ireland has actively supported Liberia’s development since 2005, investing nearly €100 million by the end of 2023. The relationship deepened with the establishment of a Development Office in 2010. The long-standing engagement between the two countries includes contributions from Irish missionaries and peacekeeping operations. This engagement has been strengthened even further in recent years by the opening of a full Irish Embassy in 2018 and the appointment of a resident ambassador in 2024.
Ireland enjoys a strong relationship with government and development partners, and is recognised in Liberia as a committed development partner. We have prioritised work in areas where we can add value and that are of shared priority with the Government of Liberia. Ireland also works closely with the other three EU Member States (Germany, France and Sweden) present in Liberia, and the EU Delegation, to advance priority issues of democracy and human rights, and collaborate on EU programming for sustainable development.
The overall ambition of the strategy is to advance Ireland’s interests and values in Liberia through support to sustainable development, peace and gender equality.
The strategy will build on previous achievements in Liberia and will deliver on six high level outcomes:
- Ireland’s influence is expanded through strengthened political, economic and cultural links and high quality consular services are provided.
- More transparent, inclusive and accountable institutions and strengthened civil society.
- More women and girls can safely access sexual and reproductive health and rights, in particular sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response.
- Vulnerable communities increase their food and nutrition security.
- Vulnerable communities are more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
- Effective and efficient systems and a safe and conducive work environment support
