Lost, stolen or damaged passport

Lost or stolen

  • Make an application for a new passport immediately using Passport Online. This is the fastest way to report your passport as lost or stolen and ensures that no one else can use it for travel.
  • If you find a passport that you have previously reported as lost or stolen, please do not travel on this passport. You may be stopped at an international border. You should return the passport to the Passport Service.
  • The validity (duration) of your next passport may be less than the normal 10 year passport. If you have lost 2 or more passports, your passport validity may be less than normal but you will still have to pay the full fee.
  • It may take longer to process the application for your next passport so make sure you have your new passport before you book any travel.

Damaged

  • If your passport is damaged, do not travel on it. It may cause difficulties when you are crossing international borders.
  • If your passport has been damaged you will need to return the damaged passport when you are making an application for a new passport.
  • It may take longer to process the application for your next passport so make sure you have your new passport before you book any travel.

Passport Online is the fastest way to apply for your passport. You can use the paper based, Post Passport postal service, but this will take longer.

Overseas

If your passport is lost, stolen or damaged while you are on holidays, you need a travel document to return home. You should contact your nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate who may be able to help.

Business passport

I wish to apply for a business passport

Some business travelers may require a second passport to allow for travel when their current passport is being held by an Embassy for visa issuing purposes. A second passport allows for travel in that instance.

Passport Card for travel within the European Union, the UK and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) will often meet your needs rather than a second passport book.

We consider applications for second passports for business purposes on a case-by-case basis. Extra time is needed to process these applications.

The Passport Service reserves the right to issue a second passport. It is normally valid for a maximum of 3 years.
