Ireland in Liberia
Ireland’s link with Liberia stretches back over a number of decades, from the early activity of Irish Missionaries working in education to the Defence Force’s peacekeeping presence. Both are well remembered in Liberia and have contributed to a strong relationship between Ireland and Liberia.
Ireland has a positive reputation as a partner in Sierra Leone, as an important advocate of credible and peaceful elections and as a champion for women’s political participation.
Ireland’s international development programme in Liberia was established through a Development Office in 2005, following the end of the second Liberian civil war. Through the Programme, we have been supporting health services, gender equality and the governance and security sector for over a decade.
The Irish Embassy opened in Liberia in 2018, and the appointment of a resident Ambassador in 2024 has strengthened our visibility and profile in Liberia. Today the links continue to grow through the small but active Irish community, many of whom are involved in development work.
