Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge is the biggest Irish language festival in Ireland and the world, reaching over 1 million people across five continents each year.

From 1-17 March annually, our native language and culture is celebrated through community-organised events, from céilís to ciorcail comhrás (Irish dance to conversation circles), at home and across the world.

Find out more about Ireland’s mother tongue, and how it is used and celebrated globally, through the stories and resources below.

A-U of Ireland

Ireland’s national language is Irish, a Celtic language with ancient roots. Irish is a treasured aspect of Ireland’s heritage, and has long offered its speakers a unique way of seeing the world.

The Irish alphabet traditionally consists of 18 letters, from A to U. From Aiteall to Uisce, join us on a journey through Ireland’s rich culture, nature and history, one letter at a time.

Interested in learning Irish?

Your local branch of Conradh na Gaeilge will be able to point you towards Irish language courses or more informal ciorcal comhrás (conversation circles), you can join if you are interested in learning or practicing your Gaeilge. More than a million people are also using the language app Duolingo to learn Irish, for on-the-go learning.
