An official website of the Government of Ireland. About ireland.ie

Ireland’s relations with Germany are documented as far back as the 7th century, when missionaries such as St. Killian came from Ireland to Germany. Today, our two countries have a close partnership as members of the European Union, where we share common priorities.

Over the last number of years, we have seen our relationship deepen and intensify culminating in the launch of the Ireland in Germany, A Wider And Deeper Footprint strategy.

Growing links

Germany is Ireland’s third largest trading partner and our largest trading partner in the European Union. We are both strong export-driven economies and investment between our countries is thriving. Two-way trade between the countries has more than doubled over the last decade and now stands at over €60bn.

Almost 20,000 Irish people live in Germany, and over 15,000 people born in Germany have made Ireland their home. Irish people have brought their culture with them with 12 GAA Clubs throughout Germany as well as a number of Irish language groups throughout the country.

Germany is Ireland’s third largest tourism market globally with over 315,000 German tourists coming to Ireland during the summer season in 2023, reflecting the deep curiosity and warmth towards Ireland amongst German people.

Ireland in Germany: A wider and deeper footprint

Germany is an indispensable partner for Ireland: whether in day-to-day debate and negotiation on European legislation which directly impacts on Irish citizens.

This can be from agricultural policy to banking regulation or on the global stage as we jointly seek to address some of the world’s biggest challenges - that defy the control of any single nation - from migration to crisis prevention and disarmament.
